In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Southern California pets, amateur astronomers, Reflection Removal, Jay L. Clendenin and r/PhotoshopRequest.
- Elise Hu reports Southern California Pets Receive Aid From Rescue Groups with photos by Ryan Kellman. "Animal rescue groups are moving hundreds of dogs and cats out of fire-devastated Southern California to relieve the local animal shelters overwhelmed by temporarily housing the pets of evacuees," she writes.
- Photographer Daniel Stephen Homer spent five years crossing four continents to photograph amateur astronomers who have made an outsized contribution to the field. He's published them in Route of the Beautiful Star, which the Guardian previews.
- In Reflection Removal in ACR, Julieanne Kost shows how to remove reflections in plate glass windows with a single click using the new Reflection Removal Tech Preview in Adobe Camera Raw:
- Heidi Volpe interviews former staff photographer for the Los Angeles Times Jay L. Clendenin about covering the Los Angeles Fire and Citizen Journalism. "The term 'citizen journalist' makes me cringe," he says. "I am very aware of human behavior and the desire to 'know' and 'report' what's happening (in particular when it's their neighborhood). But there are a couple of significant distinctions between said 'man-on-the-street' spreading a 'story' and a trained Journalist (capital J) reporting: ethics and facts."
- A Reddit poster wonders how to do a One Time Photo Upscale for a Funeral. "You can try asking for help on r/PhotoshopRequest," one person wrote. "Users provide their post processing attempts for tips (or for free; note that in your post if you literally can’t afford anything) on there."
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look five years back. And please support our efforts...
