In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at AP's week, Reuters' week, Arthur Tress, ice fishing, Karan Kapoor, Superb Owl, AI Detector and an old photo.
- The Associated Press showcases its Week in Pictures curated by photo editor Subramoney Iyer.
- And Reuters posts 20 more Pictures of the Week from its photographers.
- In Magic Reality: The Eyes of Arthur Tress, Flashbak features images from the career of the black-and-white photographer. The large photos are interspersed with quotes from Tress,
- Mike Johnston photographed Ice Fishing on Keuka Lake in upstate New York. "I've been trying to get a good shot of this for a few years now," he writes. "Photography is a lot like fishing -- you've got to have your line in the water if you want to get anything."
- Suzanne Sease features Ganpati Immersion, the personal project of Karan Kapoor. "This series holds profound significance for me -- marking both my return to Mumbai, the city of my birth, after years at boarding school in England and my debut as a photographer," Kapoor says. "The festival culminates in a moving ritual: the immersion of Lord Ganesh idols into the ocean, symbolizing renewal and impermanence."
- Joe Hernandez reminds us the Super Bowl isn't the only game in town this Sunday. In fact, The Superb Owl Might Be for You. He notes, "Though it's light-hearted, Superb Owl Sunday has also become a way for people to earnestly engage with the birds of prey. As NPR previously noted, it is 'sacred day, a chance to appreciate the majestic creature by posting owl pics on social media en masse.'"
- AI Detector from BitMind CEO Ken Miyachi is a Web app where you can drag-and-drop suspicious images for fast deepfake detection results. We tried it with one of our photos. It correctly pointed out it was not AI generated.
- In That's My Old Ball Coach (gift link), Dan Barry made a cup of coffee before digging through a stack of printed newspapers one Sunday to see what he had missed. He'd missed a old photo of some L.A. Dodgers on a break from spring training that just happened to include someone he knew. "The man in the photo was my old C.Y.O. baseball coach, Jim Romano, whom I hadn’t seen or thought of in 50 years," he writes.
