In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Westminster Dog Show, Farmer Guðjón, American Photography, chess carving in India, the OM-3, calibrating an Apple display, scanning old photos and AP on Oval Office access.

  • Reuters shares 27 photos of the Westminster Dog Show won by Giant Schnauzer named Monty.
  • Chris Broughton interviews Ragnar Axelsson about his black-and-white portrait of Farmer Guðjón. "The photograph kind of breaks the rules of framing, but it works," Axelsson says. "It was a turning point in my career."
  • Christian House reviews American Photography, "an expansive, sometimes beautiful but often shocking survey at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam over the past two centuries" that shows "what has been great for some has been downright awful for others."
  • Matjaz Tancic photographs the masters of The Art of Chess Carving in India. "Beyond stacks of gnarled logs, inside unsuspecting brick buildings off the main streets, generations of master craftsmen carefully carve, sand and polish intricate chess pieces, carrying on a long legacy in the country where the earliest versions of chess were played over 1,500 years ago," writes Roxanne Hoorn.
  • Mike Johnston elaborates on his discussion of the OM-3 with two pieces. In Same Price he points out that you can get the OM-1 Mark II for the same price to avoid the OM-3 retro styling. And in Get a Grip! (New OM-3), he discusses the lack of a grip on the new camera.
  • Howard Oakley asks, Can You Calibrate Your Apple or MacBook Pro Display? "Unless you're a professional color-grading video or achieving perfection in your photos, you should never need to calibrate these displays," he writes. "This article explains how this works and how you can tweak those displays to your own liking." Oakley explains how to use Apple Pro Display Calibrator whether or not you have a device to measure white point and luminance. (We did calibrate our M2 MacBook Pro not long after we got it up and running.)
  • A Reddit poster asks about the Cost to Scan Old Photos after hearing it would be $15,000 to digitize "five banker boxes of photographs and one small shopping bag of home videos."
  • Associated Press Executive Editor Julie Pace issued an AP Statement on Oval Office Access after the White House "barred from accessing an event in the Oval Office" over its continued use of "Gulf of Mexico," which the AP points out is what the rest of the world has called that body of water for over 400 years. "As a global news agency that disseminates news around the world, the AP must ensure that place names and geography are easily recognizable to all audiences,' Amanda Barrett explains.
