Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 591st in our series of Saturday matinees today: The Time Thief.

Steven Michael contributed this 2:12 Artist Spotlight about Steven Taylor a few years ago. Michael notes Taylor is the first black owner of a fine art gallery.

Taylor, a former software enginner, is himself a photographer who decided he wanted to own his own gallery. So he established Ubuntu Fine Art in the historic Germantown section of Philadelphia. "Where compassion meets creativity and every work tells a story of humanity," is the gallery's tag line.

On the gallery's Web site, Taylor spells that out a bit:

At Ubuntu Fine Art Gallery, we believe in the power of connection -- between people, cultures and the world around us. Rooted in the South African philosophy of Ubuntu, which means "I am because we are," our gallery celebrates the beauty of shared humanity through photography.

Our work reflects the idea that true artistry connects us all, fostering empathy and unity. When you engage with our photography, you're not just viewing an image; you're experiencing a profound connection to the world, a moment captured that resonates with the collective spirit of Ubuntu.

Explore our collection and discover photography that not only captures the eye but also touches the soul, reminding us of the shared journey we all partake in.

He talks about his own photography at the beginning of this video as we watch him going about the work of hanging prints. It's clear the gallery flows from the same impulse as his photography.

And we're glad to see it's still around a few years later, still "stealing time."
