HP's Instant Ink program, once upon a time, promised free ink in return for a per page print charge on its printers. And if you printed no more than 10 pages a month, you could even avoid that.

We don't print much, especially text in color, so we rarely exceed 10 pages a month. Images go to photo printers, text to a laser. But occasionally we need to scan a color document and that's where the HP comes in.

The catch, if you can call it that, is that your printer must be online so HP can monitor the number of pages you print and the ink remaining in the ink cartridges. We do go offline now and then with our VDSL connection but that hasn't mattered to the program as long as we got back online.

The program was discontinued in 2024 for new customers but existing ones (like us) continue to enjoy its benefits.

And last week that included a new set of inks.

We're glad to see HP continue to honor its commitment even as it changed the game for new customers (which is fair enough).
