In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the sound barrier, PhotoVogue, the Nature Photography contest, fairytale homes and minimalism.

  • The Guardian presents images from the ninth PhotoVogue Festival in Milan that celebrate nature.
  • Winners of the Nature Photography Contest have been revealed. Christopher Paetkau's image of a polar bear in "a sea of blazing magenta fireweed" took top honors while Thomas Vijayan was named Photographer of the Year.
  • Kasia Pawlowska tells the story of the Whimsical, Fairytale Homes Hidden in San Francisco built by the Rousseau brothers in two blocks of the Sunset district in the 1930s. Photos by Charles Russo.
  • In Less Is More, Jason Row sings the praises of the art of minimalism. "The key is to bring the maximum attention to the subject by have as little distraction as possible in the rest of the image," he writes. "Just remember, don't make the subject too large but let the background make the subject stronger to the eye."

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
