In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at José Luis Ledesma, Turkey, a controversial copper mine, the GFX100RF, image stabilization and lighting kits.

  • Lorenzo Tondo interviews José Luis Ledesma about Documenting Argentina's Military Dictatorship. "Those were difficult years," Ledesma says. "You couldn't trust anyone. Unofficial squads of soldiers would arrive in dark‑green Ford Falcons, without license plates -- vehicles that had become symbols of terror. They arrested political opponents, who then vanished without a trace."
  • Reuters reports Istanbul Mayor's Arrest Triggers Largest Protests in Turkey in Over a Decade in pictures. "Turkish authorities have detained 1,133 people across Turkey since the start of protests five days ago against the detention of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said."
  • Associated Press photographer Matias Delacroix provides Aerial Views of a Controversial Copper Mine. "Buried in the rolling hills and dense jungles of Panama's eastern Caribbean Donoso region, the mine is marked by heavy machinery and rubble slicing into the earth, clashing with the vivid blues and green of the vast nature enveloping it," he writes.
  • In My Thoughts About the New Fujifilm GFX100RF, Mike Johnston shares his take on the new medium-format camera with its built-in lens and dedicated aspect ratio dial. "I like the GFX100RF well enough as it is (without a lot of "if only it had..." objections, is what I mean) and I'm very interested in it on a number of levels," he writes. "It's been a lot of fun to look into it and I'm still eager to learn more."
  • In How Well Does Image Stabilization Work?, Thom Hogan takes a deep dive on a chart that Fujifilm executives pulled up during the recent introduction of the GFX100RF. "The days of camera companies providing useful technical white papers about their features and performance seem to be long gone (rest in peace Chuck Westfall)," he writes. "Executives seem unable to explain things. Engineers would rather avoid talking to you."
  • Zach Sutton details The Best Lighting Kits You Can Rent for All Budgets. "Please keep in mind that no lighting kit is perfect for everything. What you might use in a studio photography setting would not necessarily be the same tools you would use at a wedding or with automotive photography," he writes.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look five years back. And please support our efforts...
