In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at South Korea's wildfires, Nick Hannes, photobooks by women, a revealing question, GIMP 3.0.2 and Raw camera settings.
- Reuters covers the South Korea Wildfires forcing thousands in the southeastern region of the country to evacuate.
- In New Capital, Nick Hannes speaks to Sophie Wright about the interconnectedness of his projects, the global phenomenon of the "generic city" and using humor as a strategy to engage his audience.
- What They Saw: Historical Photobooks by Women Comes to Getty is an interactive pop-up reading room at the Getty. "Open from April 8 through May 11, this exhibition highlights over 100 photobooks by women dating from 1843 to 1999 and a selection of contemporary photobooks by Southern California female photographers." Mary Miller, director of the Getty Research Institute, noted, "By revisiting these works, we're not just celebrating their artistry -- we're ensuring that these voices remain an integral part of photographic history."
- Mike Johnston asks a Revealing Question. He wonders whether you'd rather have the 26 oz. GFX100RF or the 26.2 oz. OM-3. Medium format or Micro Four Thirds? Comments point out image stabilization and lens choice as reasons to go with the OM-3.
- GIMP 3.0.2 has been released. "The initial release of GIMP 3.0 was great and we deeply appreciate all the positive comments as well as the constructive feedback from new and existing users!," the team wrote. "You helped us uncover a number of bugs and regressions and GIMP 3.0.2 provides fixes for several of them." They are returning to the pre-2.10 development process of only adding new features on minor releases to respond more quickly to problems and bugs.
- A Reddit poster went to a party and heard a photographer claim, If You Shoot in Raw Then Is It Fine Not to Adjust Camera Setting Each Time. True or false? Commenters point out how true and how false the statement is. But, we confess, we are a little lax about changing anything but the aperture as we shoot Aperture Priority these days and capture Raw only.
