If you have a problem, the legend goes, share it with a worry doll. Tell one worry to a doll, then put them under your pillow when you go to bed. While you sleep, the dolls will carry your worries away.
Made of wire, wool and colorful leftover cloth, the dolls can be quite small. Which means they are less likely to disturb your sleep at least. And since worries themselves are weightless, there's no advantage to size.
We have a world class worrier on board here and she has been given and acquired quite a collection of miniature worry dolls. We snuck a couple down to the studio to focus in them.
We don't think she's ever used them. She was probably worried she'd lose them.
So we can't testify to their usefulness, although we understand they are helpful in modern pediatrics and child psychiatry. They function as "some kind of imaginary, but trustworthy 'listener,' 'allayer' and 'contact person.' The doll, in turn, will work for psychiatrists, psychologists, educators and parents as some kind of 'agent' and 'troubleshooter' between child and adult," Wikipedia explains.
These days, though, we suspect they would be just as appreciated among adults. At least the adults who are reading the news.
But they were a bit reluctant to come out for their portraits. We had to fish them out with a pair of tweezers.
As we zoomed in on these little characters, we had to admire the creativity of the people who made them. They were each a bit different, resembling the art of tying fishing flies.
Maybe we'll go on Signal and suggest them as lures to the video game "warriors" running the country these days.
