In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Sony World Photography awards, World Press Photo awards, Andrew Burr, Jill Connelly, spring in bloom, Cristina Mittermeier, local newsrooms, Proof Portal, Text Substitutions and Memory of the World Register.

  • Winners of the Sony World Photography Awards have been announced. The Photographer of the Year was awarded to British photographer, Zed Nelson for The Anthropocene Illusion. Daniel Dian-Ji Wu, a 16 year old from Taiwan, was named Youth Photographer of the Year "for his sun-soaked image of a Californian skate."

  • The World Press Photo award winners were also announced with Samar Abu Elouf of the New York Times taking home the Photo of the Year award for his portrait of nine-year-old Mahmoud Ajjour, who was injured during an Israeli attack on Gaza City in March.
  • In Floating Lines, Steve Duda features the photos of Andrew Burr as he and anglers Thad Ferrell and Sarah Tescher floated 45 miles of the lower Kongakut River in northeast Alaska.
  • In Old Glory, Trump, and the LA Fire Disasters, Michael Shaw and Cara Finnegan discuss Jill Connelly's photo of a man retrieving an American flag outside a burning house during the Eaton Fire in Altadena, Calif. The discussion examines American identity and disaster response, particularly in light of Donald Trump's false claims about California's response to massive wildfires and his vow to place conditions on disaster assistance.

  • Reuters features 20 photos of Spring in Bloom Around the World.
  • Kate Mothes spotlights conservation photographer Cristina Mittermeier's photos advocating The Need for Hope Amid Crisis.
  • Suzanne Sease features Local Newsrooms, the personal project of Ann Hermes. "As a photographer with over 15 years of experience in newsrooms, I have a great deal of respect for the institutions that bring small communities the news," Hermes says. "Studies now show that local government spending goes up, voter participation declines and cities often lose their bond rating after the loss of a local newspaper."
  • Paul Melcher talks to the team behind Proof Portal about its effort "to restore confidence in digital media by making it possible to prove what's real and provide lasting tools to expose deepfakes."
  • The free Text Substitutions work in all metadata fields in Bridge's IPTC Core panel as well as in the filename to replace over 90 special codes with their equivalent text. "For example, typing [[tTime]] in the description of an image then running this tool will replace it with the timestamp the photo was created. [[mFileName]] will be replaced with the file's name," the developer notes.
  • UNESCO's Memory of the World Register has added 74 new inscriptions bringing the total number of inscribed collections to 570. The register consists of documentary collections including books, manuscripts, maps, photographs, sound or video recordings, which bear witness to the shared heritage of humanity. Among the new inscriptions are several of photographic interest.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
