Matinee: 'Food Photographer Alex Lau' Share This on LinkedIn   Tweet This   Forward This

19 April 2025

Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 600th in our series of Saturday matinees today: Food Photographer Alex Lau.

This is one of the clips in the Adobe. Your Shot. Your Way. series advertising Adobe Lightroom. But that's not why we wanted to bring it to your attention.

This 1:30 clip featuring food photographer Alex Lau greatly amused us. It's included in his Make Your Food Photos Pop tutorial for the Creative Cloud site. Which includes a couple of free food presets for Lightroom, by the way.

Introducing that project, he said, "What I love about food photography is that it's appealing to everyone. No matter what your taste and interest in cuisines, you're going to find something that's going to appeal to people and their senses."

Which is interesting but not amusing.

The amusing bit wasn't the photography either. We get just glimpses of Lau at work both behind the camera and on the keyboard editing his images, which he insists is essential to creating a mouth-watering image.

Well, that's your hint. Mouth watering.

Because it seems to us (although we could be mistaken) that before Lau actually lines up the shot and presses the shutter button, he takes a bite out of whatever it is he's shooting.

And no, he doesn't use the Healing Brush to restore the product's integrity (although we do see him repair a cracked cookie).

We didn't think taking a bite out of your subject was kosher. Or, who knows, we might have found food photography irresistible.
