In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at early American photography, Magnum's Square Print sale, Esteban Felix, night and twilight photography, off-season photography, communication, slow app launches and WD's new HDD recycling.
- Deborah Nicholls-Lee reviews The New Art: American Photography, 1839-1910, which "documents American photography's first 70 years through 225 photographs, reversing the usual top-down approach by focusing on unknown makers that tell nuanced stories about the U.S. during a period of immense social, geographical and industrial change," she writes. "Most of the pictures in the exhibition have never been published and offer fresh insights into early photography's role in the making of America."
- Magnum's Square Print Sale: Spectacle offers over 80 signed or estate-stamped, museum-quality 6x6 prints available online for one week. Prices range from $110 to $300 with the boxed set for $6,000. Mee-Lai Stone picks a few favorites.
- Associated Press photographer Esteban Felix visited a historical costume gathering and came back with a photo of A Group of Vintage-Style Fans. "With a simple composition, I was able to capture the spontaneity of their conversation, along with the rich details of their hats, headdresses and classic suits," he writes. "Then, a wave of warm afternoon light appeared just before sunset, casting the perfect glow to bring this group back from the past."
- Derrick Story discusses Night and Twilight Photography. "For night photography I use both my iPhone 15 Pro Max and the OM System OM-3," he writes.
- Jason Row reveals Why I Travel Off Season for Photography. "There are many advantages to traveling in the off season and few disadvantages," he writes. "The most important is cost, by keeping costs lower, you can travel longer or take more trips per year."
- A Reddit poster who used to book sessions like families, portraits, and small weddings reveals One Thing I Wish I'd Done Way Earlier in My Photography Business. In a word, communicate. "Looking back, I think I underestimated how unfamiliar this process is for most people. They're not thinking about timelines or file formats. They just want to know they're in good hands," they write. "And when you take the time to lead them clearly, they relax and trust you more."
- Howard Oakley investigates Why Some Apps Launch Very Slowly. "Many different workarounds have been proposed blindly to tackle a problem that doesn't appear to have properly diagnosed in the first place," he observes.
- Avram Piltch reports WD Launches HDD Recycling Process That Reclaims Rare Earth Elements, Cuts Out China. "The new process reclaims Rare Earth Oxides containing dysprosium, neodymium, and praseodymium from hard drives, along with aluminum, steel, gold, palladium, and copper," he writes. "The REO reclamation takes place completely within the U.S. and those materials go back into the U.S. market."
