In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at hats at the Derby, Green Day, the Aurora Borealis, a 108-billion-pixel scan, dogs and Leica price increases.
- The Associated Press captures the Colorful Plumed Hats at Churchill Downs for the 151st Kentucky Derby. And not just.
- Mario Anzuoni of Reuters is there as Green Day Gets a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles.
- NASA astronaut Don Pettit captured a pair of time-lapses of the Aurora Borealis from the International Space Station in eartly April 2025:
- Hirox has created a 108-billion-pixel scan of Johannes Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, which includes 3D views of a few details. And here's how they did it:
- Mike Johnston has issued a Baker's Dozen Call for Work: Dogs. "Any picture that has a dog in it in some way, shape or form is eligible," he writes. "It does not have to be your dog." There is a prize, too.
- Hillary K. Grigonis reports Leica Confirms That Prices Will Increase in the US as a Result of Tariffs, Starting in May. "Leica cameras are largely made in Germany, although the company also has a manufacturing center in Portugal. Imports from Germany and other EU countries to the U.S. are currently facing a 10 percent tariff under the 90-day pause," she writes.
