In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at prisoners of war, more Alcatraz, Hong Kong, iPhone = Leica, Harold Davis, the 16-bit fallacy, Muybridge and Apple Silicon.

  • In Russia and Ukraine Exchange 205 Prisoners of War, Reuters presents 20 photos from an undisclosed location in Ukraine as some Ukrainian POWs return home.
  • The Associated Press just couldn't help itself so it dug into its photo morgue for images of Alcatraz. And Reuters shows What Alcatraz Prison Looks Like Today.
  • Grace Ebert features Romain Jacquet-Lagrèze's images of Hong Kong's Soaring Architecture from his book Echoing Above. "Hong Kong's unique density has made the city grow vertically and I have been inspired by the different aspects that this density brings, from an architectural point of view and also how it has shaped the relationship between men and nature in this city," he says.
  • In iPhone = Leica (The Wrong Camera Part II), Mike Johnston wonders "why in the world, at this late date, should I even worry about consistency? Why not take pictures with my Sigma monochrome and my iPhone? And the Fuji? Who cares if the pictures go together?"
  • Harold Davis created Stair without Photoshop while waiting for an appointment. "Sitting in the waiting room, I used the Leica Fotos app on my phone to download a low-resolution version of the JPEG to my iPhone photo library. From there, I uploaded the image to my Flickr and Instagram feeds," he writes.
  • Jim Kasson discusses The 16-Bit Fallacy in medium-format cameras, shooting down five misconceptions. "While there is no harm in storing images in 16-bit format, it offers little to no advantage over 14-bit for dynamic range, tonal smoothness or color accuracy," he concludes.
  • Guy Delisle's Muybridge is a a biography about Eadweard Muydbridge (1830-1904), the pioneering photographer whose life was "hampered by betrayal, intrigue, and tragedy." Delisle is a cartoonist and the $24.95 biography is a graphic novel with sample pages at the link.
  • In Choosing an Apple Silicon Mac, Howard Oakley details the trade-offs in CPUs, memory and SSDs among the current offerings from Apple.
