In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Vesak Day, Engetsukyu, sensor noise, Lightroom catalog settings, Karen Williams, the Foto app and tripod heads.
- Reuters features 21 photos of Vesak Day, which commemorates the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha.
- Harold Davis explains Engetsukyu (Moon Bridge) is so named "because the bridge and its reflection in the water form a full moon shape." And, of course, he has a lovely illustration of the effect.
- Jim Kasson looks at How Sensor Noise Scales With Exposure Time in a CMOS sensor. "To get the most from your camera, you need to understand not just what noise is present -- but how it evolves over time," he writes.
- In Catalog Settings Explained, Julieanne Kost covers Lightroom Classic's database features:
- There Is No Magic Formula is an excerpt from The Photo Hustle by Karen Williams. She explains how to break into the business. "If you're hoping for a perfect path to success from Point A to Point B, I'm sorry to be the one to break it to you -- it just doesn't exist," she writes. "No two photographers fall into success in the same way."
- Jason Row reviews Foto, an Android and iOS app "developed by photographers for photographers" for sharing photos that recently came out of beta. A desktop version is also planned. Foto is designed to celebrate "a medium that, at its best, brings us closer together, fostering empathy and understanding in a world that often feels fragmented," the company notes.
- A Reddit poster asks about Tripod Heads and gets several brief but comprehensive answers on how to tell if the head is replaceable and what the difference is between types of heads.
