It took us quite a while to decipher this watch dial. What time is it displaying?

That it was the illustration for a full page ad (in a magazine we have since discarded) didn't help. It made us suspicious of some nonsense.
But nothing of the kind. Perhaps just the opposite.
The opposite of nonsense would be romance, in our book. Romance in the sense of the unreal, the not-reality, that (somehow nevertheless) is as real as anything.
And so we have the two lovers on a cobblestone street with festive lights illuminating the darkness meeting under the clouds.
We decided, after a lingering doubt, that they are animated. Their heads at least. Probably their arms too. One can't be too subtle about these things.
The two stars above the clouds are telling the time. The one on the left, the hours; the one on the right, the minutes. They are, certainly, themselves animated.
The one on the left above the boy traverses the list of hours solemnly from zero to 12, while the one on the right above the girl skips more quickly through the minutes from zero to 60.
She perhaps left her chair at the cafe when she saw him arriving in the evening with flowers behind his back.
They meet in a kiss at midnight.
Or perhaps on the hour as the small watch chimes. We've no idea.
Either way, what a swell way to tell time.
