In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at recent storm damage, Bay to Breakers, Cannes Red Carpet, Reuters' photos of the weekend, Japanese stone works and JPEGs.
- In Storm Systems Sweep Across Parts of the U.S. Midwest and South, the Associated Press documents the recent devastation.
- Douglas Zimmerman raced around to get photos of the wildest costumes of San Francisco's Bay to Breakers race.
- Reuters showcases 40 images of Style From the Cannes Red Carpet.
- In Cannes, Eurovision and a Pope's Inaugural Mass, Mee-Lai Stone presents photos of the weekend from around the world.
- Harold Davis shares two images of Japanese Stone Works. "Stone works in Japan, both ancient and modern, are masterful and well crafted," he writes.
- In What's So Important About JPEGs?, Thom Hogan shows how much of even camera exposure decisions rely on JPEGs (which render Raw data to the display). He's cataloged "over 600 decisions" involved in making an image but "it's really just three things you need to think about to get JPEGs right: tonality, color and style."
