In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Alan Taylor's photos of the week, a family photo, lidar and Sebastião Salgado.
- Alan Taylor presents his selection of Photos of the Week, including a swannery in southern England, tornado damage in Kentucky, drought conditions in the Florida Everglades and a rally race in a Chinese desert.
- Carolyn Kaster writes about her photo of a woman salvaging A Family Photo from the rubble of a tornado. "The sweetness of the portrait she carried and the color palette, echoed in Hailee herself," she writes. "This moment shows loss, recovery and resilience. A family photo is a precious thing." The image was also included in Taylor's selection above.
- Ryan Erik King reports Lidar Can Permanently Damage Your Phone's Camera when it's coming from a car. "The lidar sensor mounted in a pod above the windshield shot out a laser barrage of near-infrared light into the camera," he writes. "The damage was immediate and obvious, leaving behind a red, pink and purple constellation of fried pixels."
- Clinton Cargill celebrates the life of Sebastião Salgado (gift link) in pictures. The Brazilian photojournalist has passed away at the age of 81. Mike Johnston posted an obituary this morning and we'll add one shortly, too.
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
