In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at two apple trees, Mount Everest, Stefan Falke, Abhishek Khedekar, the rainy season, Natacha Pisarenko, Manhattanhenge, Google Photos, portfolios and a Masters in Photograph.
- Photographers Jem Southam and Barbara Bosworth tell A Tale of Two Apple Trees by chronicling a year in the life of a single tree in each of their backyards: one in England, the other in New England.
- The Associated Press documents climbers as Hundreds Scale Mount Everest in a weather-hit climbing season. They are trying to reach the summit before the climbing season finishes at the end of this month.
- Suzanne Sease features La Frontera: Artists Along the U.S. Mexican Border, the personal project of Stefan Falke. "I photographed over 200 artists and art supporters on both sides along the entire 2000 miles long divide to show the vibrant cultural side of a region that is usually portrayed by the international media with the sole focus on violent crime," he introduces the project.
- Magali Duzant writes about Indian artist Abhishek Khedekar's experimental project Tamasha, Persian for performance or a grand show. "Photography may be a visual medium but one of its strengths is its ability to transcend that, activating the other senses and bringing a viewer into a scene," she writes.
- Dahlia Ambrose presents 18 Photographs of the Rainy Season That Are Artful and Dramatic. "There are a lot of subjects and scenes that can be beautifully shot during the rain if one embraces the elements, understands light and focuses on the details," she writes.
- Natacha Pisarenko captures the connection between A Woman and Her Dog with a tight crop of their eyes. "The soul speaks through the eyes," she writes.
- In Manhattanhenge Through a Lens: Tips for Getting the Perfect Shot (gift link) Gary Hershorn, director of photography for ABC News Digital, shares some advice for capturing the fleeting moment when the setting sun perfectly aligns with the island’s grid.
- Abner Li reports Google Photos Turns 10 With Major Editor Redesign, QR Code Sharing. After detailing the changes, he adds, "Looking past the 10th birthday, the Google Photos team says it will 'continue pushing the boundaries of what's possible with AI, unlocking new ways to relive, connect with and share memories.'"
- Portfolio? Mike Johnston asks (as in do you have one). "I was just wondering if anyone does that any more -- or does everyone point to a Web site?" he writes. Some interesting responses.
- A Reddit poster asks if a Masters in Photography is good for anything. It is, responders say, if you want to teach photography.
