We had walked by this charming building without noticing it because we were focused on something in the opposite direction. But when we made a second pass by it, we were looking at the updated, modern houses alongside it and stopped to admire its tenacious hold on the past. It was built in 1941.

The Light Pole. Canon Rebel XTi with 18-55mm kit lens at 55mm, f8, 1/1000 seconds and ISO 200. Processed in Adobe Camera Raw.

The elaborate color scheme, something you'd see in a Victorian in the middle of the city not the Sunset, wasn't the only thing we admired. The wooden window frames, the original garage doors, the brick stairs, all of it suggested an era long gone but much enjoyed.

We took pains to line up the shot because, spare as the scene was, there was a light pole right in front of the place. It cut through the image like a radial arm saw with a diamond blade.

But we managed to get the pole just off the stairway, left of the second floor windows and safely over the third floor trim.

Quaint it may appear, but a pending sale on May 23 has it going for $1,975,000 as a fixer-upper. "Conventional financing will likely not work," the listing notes.

We did hunt down some interior photos just to get an idea of what fixing up would be necessary. The walls have been stripped and the bathrooms are mid-century tile and porcelain. The hardwood floors look serviceable but the first floor garage reveals an antique heating system. So, yes, there's work to be done.

But one thing the new owners will not have to worry about is street lighting. Every night this beautiful old Victorian will shine in its own spotlight.
