In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at World Oceans Day, World Pride, the Tony Awards, the Olive Cotton Awards, Ryo Minemizu, Jordon Conway, Karl Mondon, Bernini, Colorsuite and Bill Atkinson.

  • Winners of the Photo Competition for UN World Oceans Day have been announced in several categories.
  • The Associated Press features images from World Pride, which gathers LGBTQ+ advocates from around the globe.
  • Reuters shares 36 photos of the most memorable moments from the Tony Awards as well as 60 more from the Tony Awards Red Carpet.
  • The Guardian highlights a few of the 65 finalists for the Olive Cotton Awards.
  • Kate Mothes presents Ryo Minemizu's images of Plankton Off the Coast of Japan. "Although I only dive to depths of around 25 meters at most, each dive now presents an opportunity to encounter juvenile deep-sea fish and jellyfish in forms that most of humanity has never seen before," Minemizu says.
  • In Award Winner It's Not the Wind, Jordon Conway explains, "In this ongoing project, I am interested in the relationship between autonomy and the uncontrollable conditions of America's current political and social landscape."
  • Photographer's Notebook: The Final Frame features 35 highlights from photojournalist Karl Mondon's career. "After 45 years of chasing deadlines (the last 35 here at the mighty Bay Area News Group), I am hanging up my press pass and putting down the viewfinder," he writes.
  • Jason Kottle snapped some close up images of Bernini's Ratto Di Proserpina (The Abduction of Proserpina) in the Borghese Gallery in Rome. He captured even the tears in Proserpina's face.
  • Alberto Lima recommends the free Colorsuite Web app for extracting XML data from exported JPEGs to recreate Lightroom presets. "While the Colorsuite app easily pulls information like saturation, luminosity and individual color data, it cannot distinguish if an image was edited to be monochrome or color," he writes. Which explains the name.
  • We note the passing of Bill Atkinson, who developed HyperCard, QuickDraw, the menu bar and marching ants on selections from pancreatic cancer at the age of 74. He was also a photographer. A selection of Atkinson's photographs can be seen on his Web site. "As a pioneer of new color management and digital printing technologies, I have shared my expertise with many fellow nature photographers," he wrote.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look five years back. And please support our efforts...
