23 June 2025

With the fog swirling around the house this morning, we entertained no doubt summer has arrived in San Francisco. A few days ago, in fact. Which, fooled us for a while, because they were uncharacteristically sunny. If very windy.

Summer. Nikon D200 with unrepaired 18-200mm Nikkor at 75mm (112mm equivalent), f11, 1/30 second and ISO 200. Processed in Adobe Camera Raw.

The change of season (yes, we have seasons here) always means it's time to update the photo on our site's home page. It's important to update a home page. It shows you're still there.

Long ago, we had the bright idea of minimizing updates on the home page to four times a year by just changing the photo, a schedule we thought we could handle, but we regularly don't get to it right away. We like the shot to be taken in the season, not before it.

So on June 21, when we saw the morning sun falling our our dilapidated outdoor furniture, we abandoned our cappuccino, grabbed the D200 and stumbled outside to line up the shot that charmed us from the office window. Summer began on June 20, the day before. So this was perfect timing.

It was difficult to line up the same angle we had seen from our office chair. We had to squat and then the sun came right under the lens shade. So we took a couple of images but liked the first best. Beginner's luck, apparently.

After we uploaded the edited image (which is just a thumbnail that forgives many flaws), we took the rest of the day off.

After all, it was summer.
