An Apple a Day

15 August 2020

It was so hot yesterday that I had to find somewhere other than the house to put my feet up and enjoy the isolation. Fortunately there was a slight breeze off the ocean that cooled the patio in the afternoon shade, so I sat out there to recover.

The apples on the apple tree, I noticed, had gotten big enough to show off. So I decided to text a photo of them to Joyce. She could probably use an apple a day there to keep the doctor away.

"I bet they taste better than the apples I just ate," she responded.

I vaguely recalled her saying something about the food before. But I let it drop.

When I talked to her this morning, she said they are giving her so many pills that they're making her sick. Could be the food, I pointed out.

I asked her to see if they'd let me drop off a meal for her, like I did the mail. She promised to investigate.

Don't ask the person who brings you the food, though. Ask a nutritionist.

Of course, even with all the apples in the orchard, you can't keep doctors away in the hospital. She sees Dr. Tong every day (twice yesterday).

But she can't keep track of the nurses. She doesn't think she's seen the same nurse twice yet.

"Don't they write their names on the whiteboard for you?" I asked.

"Yes but I can't read it," she complained. "It's smudged. I asked them if they didn't have anything better to clean it with and they just said they use what they have."

I asked her to take a photo of the room and text it to me. So hold your breath. Things might get a little more interesting here than a photo of an apple a day.

No promises, though.
