Home Again

26 August 2020

Around 3:30 p.m. I drove over to Kaiser Hospital and double parked in the white zone along with the other hopefuls waiting for our patients. You know, right at the shift change.

So it took a while before a nurse wheeled Joyce out to the car, by then parked strategically at the ramp along the curb. She got gingerly into the front seat after I got her books, clothes and, yes, that money tree into the back seat.

Bee Well. She brought home a friend.

She was wearing a sporty-looking portable Wound VAC slung over her shoulder. As we drove away I heard it gurgling like an aquarium.

It runs all the time, day and night. You keep it plugged in when you can so you can make space walks with the battery when you need to.

Back at the house, she made it up the stairs to the bedroom where I took the picture above.

Then we went through everything:

  • Her medications, new and old, set out on the dining room table
  • The instructions for the Wound VAC (which has cannisters that get filled and replaced)
  • Getting instructions for her surgery appointment tomorrow

As she was preparing to leave the hospital this afternoon, the nurse confirmed she should return for her surgery tomorrow at 1:30. But as soon as we got home, a voice message on her phone said to come at 11:15.

So it looks like a lunch date.

She can't have anything to eat after 9:15 so I better get dinner on the table!
