Cycles

8 September 2020

To the side of the main entrance to Kaiser Hospital in San Francisco there's a metal sculpture by Roger Barry called Cycle. Waiting for Joyce to be wheeled out after an add-on surgery, we spent some time getting acquainted with it.

Cycles. Roger Barry (2005).

It was a good reminder that these sorts of things have their ups and downs, comings and goings, back and forths. No straight lines, in short.

Like the cycle of Monday, Wednesday and Friday dressing changes between 9 and 10 a.m., which will go on for months, as Tyler the Nurse (well, that's what he calls himself besides Wireless Caller) told us yesterday.

But even something more familiar. Joyce had her second shampoo since being home this morning, for example. It was one of the first things she wanted to do when she got home.

After my painting adventure with the baseboards, I got it into my head to scrub the plastic sink downstairs. It had acquired some paint drops and stains and gunk over the years since our house painter, who used it every day, had scrubbed it clean himself.

We took after it with all sorts of cleaning supplies, including a razor blade, before it was once again gleaming spotlessly in the dark garage. We stood back to admire our work. But all we could think of was what the hell did we do that for?

Well, it was a good thing we did. Joyce can't get her dressing wet so showers and baths are out. To wash her hair, she has to lean over this big sink where I can attach a hose with a shower head to the faucet to simulate a real salon-style shampoo.

It's as if there is some great plan. Or as Alana put it:

A lot of progress has been made but there is an end in sight. In the end, it will be worth it. You will probably look back on this one day and wonder how you ever did it.

We'll have to do it one cycle at a time, I think. With a lot of help from you, too. Thank you!
