A Good Apology

13 October 2020

Last night was a rough one. (And not just for the Dodgers.)

The adhesive drape of Joyce's dressing tends to roll up along the edges when she gets in and out of chairs. And her slip sticks to it.

My job is to put more drape over the rolled up section, covering the sticky part. She can't reach back there but sometimes she puts cloth tape over the sticky part. Or tries to.

Drape is difficult to handle. It's a very thin and stretchable plastic with a thicker plastic backing on the outside (so you can handle it) and a thinner plastic covering the adhesive side with two blue pull tabs at the end of the large sheets.

You pull off half the plastic covering the adhesive and drop it into place. Then you pull off the other half so it adheres completely. Then you grab a corner of the thick plastic backing by a pull tab and take it off (my favorite part) before tearing off the blue tabs.

Last night, though, she was in pain. Crying pain. And when she laid down so I could get to the dressing, I saw her leg was more swollen than usual.

So I took a photo of it with her iPad and we sent it to Dr. Brenman. "Please advise."

I though we might hear something by midnight but not last night. I was getting ready to go to the Emergency Room.

But the Oxycodone Joyce had taken kicked in and she spent a restful night.

The Wound VAC was behaving strangely, though. It complained about blockage but I couldn't find any. It wasn't pumping but the pressure was at 125, where it should be.

I really think it owes us a good apology.

In A Thousand Clowns, Murray Burns tells Sandra, the social worker who falls for him during a home inspection and becomes disappointed in his failure to rise to the occasion, "Aw, Sandy, that's the most you should expect from life, a really good apology for all the things you won't get."

My policy is to settle for any basic, no-frills apology.

I got that today from Lowe's. An early phone call went unanswered since I was still in bed having strange dreams about strangling a Wound VAC.

The voice message asked us to call back. It was Alyssa who wanted to know how I liked our new washer and dryer.

I told her.

It isn't here but you already charged my card, I informed her.

"Do you still want it?" she asked. Yes.

She discovered that they had two sets in stock so she scheduled a delivery.

"I'm sorry," she said.

When I refreshed the order status page, I discovered the delivery was scheduled for Thursday afternoon. Naturally. That's when Joyce meets with Dr. Tong.

And when I tried to call back to reschedule, no one answered the phone.

I half wonder if I was dreaming.

At 10:30 this morning, Dr. Brenman called.

She said Joyce could come in but there was nothing she thought she could do for her. Instead, she was going to get in touch with Dr. Tong to consult about the swelling.

So she's on the case. Nothing like a picture to show instead of tell someone what's going on.

More to come on this, I'm afraid....
