The First Wash

18 October 2020

Yesterday we read the manual for the new washer. It recommended running an empty load to clean out the washer before doing the first real load. So we did that.

"Awesome," Joyce said. The control panel makes it very easy to set up the washer for several kinds of loads and several ways of handling them. You can modify those settings if you want and it will become the new default.

It was quiet as a mouse but then it wasn't doing any work. I don't think it even used any soap, although it complained that the dispenser, which holds 40 loads of detergent, was low. We poured some in.

But today was the maiden voyage.

There must be 20 loads of laundry soap in the dispenser so we didn't worry about that. We just powered it on, picked Regular for the type of laundry and Normal for the kind of wash (Warm/Cold) and held the start button down until the display counted down three seconds.

It spun a bit, figuring out the weight of the load to set the amount of detergent and water level and then went quietly to work.

I had wondered about getting a WiFi-enabled unit so we'd know when the wash had finished, but I had a brighter idea. "Siri, remind me to check the washer in 55 minutes," which is what the display showed. Upstairs I asked Google Home to do the same thing.

Worked flawlessly.

So the first wash is in the old dryer and the second wash is in the washer, this time as a Cold/Cold wash, which is what we normally do.

I DID HEAR from the assistant manager at the local Lowe's about our dryer. In the middle of the night Friday, he emailed me that he had two in stock, would confirm that they were not damaged and delivery one on Monday, if that was all right.

That was all right, I emailed back Saturday.

This morning I had another email from him late yesterday. Both units were damaged, he discovered, so he had canceled the Monday delivery.* He was going to check to see what was available at the DC (which I took to mean Distribution Center) and would get one to me ASAP (which we understand to be an exaggeration).

But later this morning I see the delivery has been scheduled for Wednesday.

Hope spins eternal.
