At Long Last

1 November 2020

The installers from DSI Logistics called about 40 minutes before they arrived to let us know they had a dryer from Lowe's for us.

Sidekicks. We've always kept the two-swan beach towel on top of our washer and dryer because you can't have enough art in the house.

Before the first guy could take the old Kenmore dryer out, I asked him to check the new one because we've had four damaged dryers delivered. He explained that to his partner and they took it out of the box on the street and inspected it for damage.

No damage.

So they moved the old one out, which had just finished drying the week's laundry this morning (because I was leaving nothing to chance when it came to laundry).

And then the first guy did a heroic thing, moving the washer to the left instead of leaving it on the right side where the open door (which can't be changed) blocks access to the dryer.

We've lived with that situation on the Kenmore's all this time because the outlet water hose never could reach our tub and the gas line was on the left side anyway.

Moving the washer wasn't the hard part.

I did ask the first crew from DSI if they could do that but the installer said the new outlet hose wouldn't reach either. Both those units were damaged anyway so he never installed anything.

But the installer who put the washer in when Alice was here just swapped it out. He had to leave the dryer anyway because that dryer was damaged.

Moving the washer wasn't the hard part. The water line gets an extension anyway because the dryer needs water for its steam operation. And the outlet hose reached. Not only did it reach, but it reached without the awkward kink in it that the first installer left which gurgled when the water was pumped out.

The trick, though, was getting the dryer close enough to the gas line.

Our gas line comes down the wall and points left, not right, so the two of them had to twist the nipple around to the right without blowing the house up. And they did. So the arrangement worked out (as you can see).

The first installer turned it on and ran it on the Quick cycle. He paused it and opened the door, inviting me to feel the warmth. Ah! He said when it finishes that cycle, it will be ready for clothes. You have to get the factory fumes out of it, he explained.

I thanked him several times for getting the washer on the left. Several times.

Joyce came down (she took a long walk to the market with me today) and approved the installation.

And I gave the crew all tens on the evaluation survey. And on Monday, I plan to call the Nick the Store Manager and thank him for finally getting the order delivered.

And if he's half the man I think he is, he'll offer me a free refrigerator.
