The Day After

11 September 2021

Joyce just called. A nurse finally let her have her purse, which is where her iPhone was. It had been locked up in her room. Which is why my texts and calls yesterday went unanswered.

She sounded pretty good, not at all groggy from the anesthesia, although a little hazy on some details.

She didn't get to surgery yesterday until the afternoon. So she missed lunch. Dr. Tong called me about 2:15 p.m. after the surgery.

Joyce said she was in some pain and letting the nurses know so they can manage it through the epidural but nothing was really helping much. Between the dressing and the epidural, she can't get comfortable in bed.

No one has taken her for a walk but she says it's very difficult for her to walk at the moment.

She did see Dr. Tong this morning when she came in to change the dressing and have a look at the wound. And Joyce has already had the CT scan.

So how's the food?

Horrible, she said. She takes a bite out of each compartment on the tray and then tells them she's done. "You're done?" "Yes!"

She knows she has another round in the operating room on Tuesday. But she thought today was Sunday.

Nope, I told her, it's only Saturday. We still have to take things one day at a time.
