It was a long day for Joyce. She was told she would have the debridement with Dr. Tong in the operating room with an epidural at noon.
Noon came and went.
She was told they would take her in at five. Five came and went, too.
She can't eat or drink anything prior to surgery because she has to have anesthesia for the procedure. So she was just laying in bed depressed when I visited her at 4 p.m.
She buzzed the nurses' desk at 5 p.m. to find out what was going on. They didn't have any information.
Around 6:30 a nurse popped in to say Dr. Tong has two patients on the ward waiting to get to the operating room tonight. She was going to try to contact Dr. Tong to see if she planned to postpone one or the other so they could eat.
But she came and went, too, without finding anything out.
I left myself at 6:45 on the theory that one of us should eat dinner to be able to eulogize the other.
