Yesterday's Visit

2 October 2021

When I visited Joyce yesterday afternoon, she seemed pretty alert for someone who had been knocked out for surgery in the morning.

She went in at 5:30 a.m. only to have her gurney put in a holding pattern for a couple of hours. Cat called me around 10, so it was all over by then.

She didn't get thing to eat on Thursday as she waited to get in the operating room. So the first thing she ate since Wednesday was a turkey sandwich with vegetable soup around 2:30 p.m. Friday. She wolfed down the soup and ate the turkey right out from under the bread.

She also paid some bills that are coming due next week. We thought she'd be home by now but since she's not, I brought them by. She was relieved to get them paid.

We did take a walk around the ward a couple of times after she ate. Walking makes her feel good.

And then I charged her iPhone for her. There was an outlet under the window which looked ideal but you couldn't actually plug anything into it. The outlets give, retreating into the wall when you try to press anything into them.

There's a wall system for all the other connection and I found a free outlet there. Not a place she wants to leave the charger, though. And she doesn't want to leave her phone out anyway. The place is chaotic, rearranged every time from the last time I visited.

On her walk, we heard a nurse offer another patient the flu shot. "Why not? While you're here!" she said cheerily.

So when her RN Joyce came in to do vitals, I pleaded with her for the flu shot and the Covid-19 booster. She was a degree more competent than the RN the previous time I asked who had blathered on as if noise were language. She promised the shot today and would message the doctor for an order for the booster.

We shall see.
