The Last Date

7 October 2021

It occurred to me the other day that this month of separation has been a lot like dating. Joyce lives in one place and I live in another and we meet around dinner time every day and then go for a little walk, chaperoned by the nurses (one of which called me Joyce's LB* tonight). When it's time to go, we kiss good-bye.

Well, that's all ended tonight.

Cat the Physician's Assistant called me today to say she was able to get Apria to deliver a portable Wound VAC yesterday. So the trial run we were going to do Friday night was done Wednesday night. And Joyce had no problem.

So after her dressing change early on Friday, she can come home. But don't tell anyone because she wants some time to get used to the place.

Cat also said she would order the vaccines. She found out that Joyce's particular infection does not preclude her from having the Covid-19 booster.

And by the time I got there today, Joyce had gotten both the flu shot and the Covid-19 booster. So we won't have to run around getting that next week.

Her dinner was late but after she ate we walked quite a bit. Four trips around the ward and a side trip up another hallway that had more than a few twists to it. The more she walked the stronger she felt.

The only worry I have is how she'll do on the stairs. Last time I had to call the Fire Department to get her in the house.

Apria had called the house last night, leaving a message for Joyce. So I called them today. They just wanted to confirm a few things for billing. They started billing $16 a day rental (our 20 percent share) as soon as they delivered the thing on Thursday.

I also talked to the Plastic Surgery Clinic, making three appointments for dressing changes there so they can keep an eye on the wound. And Cat said she was arranging for in-home nursing to start Monday and continue on a Monday-Wednesday-Friday schedule of dressing changes.

So much for dating. Now we're going steady.
