A Happy Birthday

29 November 2021

We had a nice little thrown-together dinner for Joyce's 71st birthday tonight. It started with a Little Original Joe's salad of pickled onions, radishes, kale, blue cheese and half a dozen other things in a lemon dressing.

Then we had the main course of Italian pot roast (also from Original Joe's) with some pasta in a butter and cheese sauce. With a La Brea Bakery baguette. And Zonin prosecco.

All that to some old '60s and '70s music on the CD player sung by Bryan Adams. Stuff like I Can't Stop Loving You and Never My Love and Sunny and God Only Knows. Nothing makes you feel ancient like listening to the music of your youth. Even as it moves you just the same way it did than.

And watching over us was the bright yellow cake with a frosting daisy on top.

The sunset was just about spent when I put the two golden sparklers in it instead of candles. One was a seven and the other was a one. Beats blowing out candles. Except you aren't supposed to light them with a match or indoors.

So after cake and salted caramel gelato, we took them out to the background and lit them as if they were fireworks.

Joyce was pretty spent by then and we still had to do her dressing change. Which was, as they have all been since she came back from the hospital, very painful. The statues in the church up the street shudder when she screams.

But all's quiet now and tomorrow we see Dr. Tong. Joyce was very happy to speak to all of her sisters today and get your texts and emails. Neither of us was sure how this birthday was going to turn out and we were more than a little wary.

Thank you for making it a very special day for her after all.
