Joyce's Birthday

30 November 2022

Yesterday Joyce celebrated her 72nd birthday with phone calls from all her sisters, even the one who fell asleep watching a movie. It made her day.

We got out of the house to shop for a puffer vest since it's in the low 40s around here this week. I would have bought a size too small, it turns out, so ruining the surprise was a good move.

And it was nice for her to get out of the house. We even drove by her last place of employment, which is surprisingly still standing. The building in which the company rented space, that is.

She did finally get an email from Dr. Tong advising us to continue with the Dakin's Solution instead of returning to the Santyl for now. But that's the only medical news.

Dinner was a caesar salad with anchovies followed by tilapia sauteed in butter and sprinkled with smoked paprika (like the Fish Market serves it), accompanied by a side of vegetable medley with some heirloom cherry tomatoes and calamata olives. It looked as festive as it sounds.

We bought a cake too small to write on (sort of a large cupcake, really, which she almost divided in half before serving quarters). So the bakery put a little sign on top and we added a couple of digits to keep things within the local fire code.

Then we gave her one more present.

We had framed an old crossword puzzle from the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. Her father had worked out the whole thing. In pen.

It was fun to read the clues and see what he had come up with. Almost like seeing his mind at work again.

He did all the puzzles on that page. In pen. I attached a photo of the others to the back of the frame for her.

I've made a little online album to share them with all those sisters who called yesterday (and anyone else who'd find it interesting).
