Joyce Gets Her Real ID

8 February 2024

When we returned to the DMV that fateful Monday, we were able to go early because Kristine the LVN had to come an hour earlier than usual.

Bingo. No line. Half hour wait.

The clerk told Joyce they share the same birthday. And not just them. "And Howie Mandel!" she added. She scanned her Real ID documents (for the third time in all this) and sent her off to get her (second) photo taken. Then she went to another window to get a temporary license and off we went, through the long line winding around the building trying to get in.

Today the mail brought her Real ID, ending a four-year ordeal.

But first we went to see Dr. Tong for her monthly debridement.

Dr. Tong popped out to ask me to come in for a moment. She had an idea.

It turns out the Kaiser wound center previously housed in Walnut Creek had moved to Geary Blvd. and she thought it might be interesting to see what they say about Joyce's wound. Sort of a second opinion.

Dr. Tong is very generous about second opinions. Kristine laughs that Dr. Tong often asks her what she thinks about a particular patient. "She's the surgeon," she defers. "Yes, but you see the patient all the time," I point out.

Not a lot of doctors are happy to have someone else chime in on what should be done. Not a lot of anyones, for that matter.

So we'll visit the wound clinic for an evaluation. But the plan is the same. It's just when to execute it.

When they do decide to close the wound, Joyce will at least have a Real ID to prove who she is.
