There is no M-F staff at these Golden SNFs. The "weekends" are rotated so any day could be someone's Saturday and Sunday. Still, having been there three days already, I was hoping to I'd have met most of her staff by my visit yesterday, which I planned to make by bus.
Joyce called in the morning. She says they changed her dressing already using the bandages I brought. And they'll do it again in the afternoon. I doubt she's right about any of that because it's only once a day.
Before I left, though, Christina called to ask if I wanted a ride to see Joyce. Yes. So she came over at noon and we drove over.
No parking in the lot, it's packed. But she found a spot on the street and in we go.
We're just in time for Yanne (Anne) to do the dressing change. I see the date I put on the Mediplex yesterday. So this is the daily dressing change.
Yanne did the Saturday dressing change but didn't use Santyl because she misread the order. Great. So I go over it with her and coach her. But she's off tomorrow. So I'll have to do this again tomorrow.
I must have coached well over half a dozen RNs through this at Kaiser and now three here. Nobody gets it from the order. It's too complicated.
Later, when I return some wound cleaner and Vashe that Yanne left behind, we go over Joyce's medication list. She tells me the doctor is Liezel Dimaano, who trained at UCSF and now works for Kaiser.
Joyce's lunch arrives. She doesn't eat much of it. But she likes the butterscotch pudding. And I get her a Boost protein drink she likes because she ate so little.
They are already playing Christmas music in the SNF halls.
Then Christina cuts Joyce's fingernails for her with a fingernail clipper she had. That's been bugging Joyce for a long time. But Christina couldn't get an emory board from the staff. I'll have to bring one.
When I get home I thank Christina again and find a nice email from Joyce's sister Carol in Rochester. Joyce had called her. They had a nice chat but Joyce seemed anxious about falling during physical therapy.
Two guys had tried to get her up but she fell back on the bed.
A short while later Joyce calls me to see if I got home safely. And then she emails me that her 74th birthday is in 25 days.
Her sister asked what her mailing address is, so I thought I'd share it here:
