We're taking the drone approach to covering Photokina 2014. No boots on the ground but aerial surveillance of the more important targets. We'll provide a brief description with links to official press releases and sponsored links for pre-ordering. This entry begins with yesterday's industry summit, including Sven Gábor Jánszky's keynote and a special award to Canon's Masaya Maeda.

INDUSTRY SUMMIT

A Look At The Future Of The Industry

International imaging industry top management discusses industry's future at traditional International Imaging Industry Summit in Flora Park on eve of Photokina 2014

International photographic and imaging industry top management met on the eve of Photokina 2014 yesterday in Cologne's Flora park for the traditional International Imaging Industry Summit. Representatives from the leading companies in the industry used the opportunity to discuss the industry's future.

The Cologne Cathedral

In his welcoming address, Cologne's Lord Mayor and Chairman of Koelnmesse's Supervisory Board Jürgen Roters, pointed out how dynamically the photographic and imaging sector had developed and just how rapidly the industry's breadth was widening.

Roters added, "Photokina's 2014's role here is that of an industry trendsetter with the goal of actively driving the development of the market."

'Innovation no longer means optimising and improving products.'

In his speech, the keynote speaker for the evening, German futurologist and founder of think tank 2b AHEAD, Sven Gábor Jánszky, offered the audience a brief insight into the industry's future from his perspective.

"Images are playing an ever larger role in consumers' lives. This is the challenge," said Jánszky, "but at the same time a huge opportunity facing the industry."

He advised, "To exploit these major business opportunities arising from the change the industry is undergoing, the established players need to take leave of entrenched linear corporate and cultural structures and rely on the logic of the entrepreneur and start-up. Innovation no longer means optimizing and improving products. Today innovation means industry is required to attack its own outmoded business models...."

Golden Photokina Pin For Masaya Maeda

Cologne's Lord Mayor also used the event to award Masaya Maeda, Senior Managing Director and Chief Executive, Image Communications Products Operations, Canon Inc. the golden Photokina pin in recognition of his services both to Photokina and the entire imaging industry.

In his remarks, Robters praised Masaya Maeda's special commitment to the imaging industry. He had dedicated himself to introducing the subject of imaging to a wide audience, thereby making an important contribution over many years to Photokina's success.

The golden Photokina pin has been awarded since the early Fifties to prominent individuals from the economic, scientific and political world for meritorious service.

RABER & REICHMANN

Kevin Raber and Michael Reichmann from the Luminous Landscape (LuLa to its fans) explore Halls 1 and 2 of the seven at Photokina in today's report. The show once filled 11 halls, Raber recalls.

"Kodak, Agfa, and Fuji at one point had their own halls," Raber continues. "These are massive buildings and in many cases two floors. Of the two halls we visited one hall was dedicated just to Leica."

The full report is amply illustrated with unusual finds, including the new Leica S.

LEICA

You can enjoy some of the atmosphere of that Leica hall at the Leica Camera Blog where post cover exhibits at the Leica Galerie at Photokina.

Here's a few to get you started:

In addition to the Leica S, the company has announced a limited special edition Leica M Edition 60 (shown at right) to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Leica rangefinder. It's $18,500 and digital but without an LCD so you can enjoy the same experience you had with the film models. And there is a new $4,750 Leica M-A film model for purists.
