Phase One Releases Capture One 11.1 Share This on LinkedIn   Share This on Google   Tweet This   Forward This

19 April 2018

Phase One has released Capture One Pro 11.1 with a new support platform, improved styles and presets and a normalization tool. In addition, the new release supports new cameras from Fujifilm, Leica, Olympus, Panasonic and Sony as well as new lenses from Canon, Leica, Sony and Tamron. Tethered support for Sony cameras now permits camera control from an iOS device.

We had a chance to test drive the new version just before release. Let's look at what's new before launching the new version.

A new Resource Hub, which also pops up when you launch v11.0 now, offers one-click access to free tutorials, news, webinars, blog posts and more.

Improved Styles and Presets

A new workflow adds a faster way to apply both Styles and Presets to a Layer on one or multiple images, offering direct control of opacity.

LCC presets can now include the lens profile and optionally the shift X/Y data with a saved preset. If an image is selected (with parameters in the lens tool set that match a stored preset), the enhanced LCC preset manager will suggest "recommended" LCC presets from all your stored presets (using Aperture, Lens and shift data to suggest relevant presets).

A new Spring Styles Pack is also included in the Built-in Styles section, offering bright pastel color grading to images.

Normalize Tool

The Normalize tool provides a reference point for exposure and white balance for batch adjustments, allowing any color to be used rather than just neutral gray as in earlier releases.

Normalize. Set Exposure, White Balance with RGB values.

Its purpose is to make easier baseline corrections to images by allowing you to store any set of RGB values for base corrective White Balance and Exposure values in the target image.

There are two ways to use the tool. Either by using the Normalize pickers to pick and store a value (to then use and apply on other images) or by typing in your preferred RGB values in the Color Selector which will reflect the values on the Apply tool.

Phase One said the Normalize tool replaces the Skin Tone White Balance tab in the White Balance tool but can be used in the same way by disabling the Exposure option.

More AppleScript

Additional AppleScript support is provided for Document templates, Camera attribute stepping, easier Favorite collection creation (can be file (URL) or text (POSIX path)), Auto adjustments, Variant reset, Open Scripting Dictionary from within Capture One, Camera Focus commands, Back-up document, Layer adjustments and Color balance adjustments.

New Shortcuts

Shortcuts for Layer On/Off and Go To Background have been added to the shortcut manager to make working with layers faster.

NEW CAMERA AND LENS SUPPORT

The Capture One R&D team, alongside our color scientists, analyze hundreds of images from each camera to provide photographers access to the best out of box experience with natural profiles. Below outlines the new camera and lens additions that Capture One 11.1 supports. A full list of supported cameras can be found online.

New camera support includes: Fujifilm X-H1, Leica M262/CL/X-U/V-Lux Typ 114/TL2, Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mk III/E-PL9, Panasonic G9/GH5S and Sony A7 Mk III.

This version also supports the Nikon D5/D850/D500 12-bit uncompressed file format.

New lens support includes: Canon EF 24-105mm f4L IS II USM; Leica Elmarit M 2.8/90, Summicron M 2/90; Sony E 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 OSS (SEL18135), Sony FE 24-105mm f4-GB OSS (SEL24105-GB); Tamron SP 70-200mm f2.8 Di VC USD G2 A025, SP 35mm f1.8 Di VC USD f012, 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 Di VC PZD A010, SP 90mm f2.8 Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD f017 and 16-300mm f3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD MACRO B016.

TEST DRIVE

Our brief test drive was to edit a recent image of a wisteria vine growing along an old fence. The capture at f8, 1/200 second and ISO 200 was made on an Olympus E-PL1 with the kit lens as a Raw file that was converted to DNG on import to our hard disk.

We made a few small edits to the file, increasing Clarity and adjusting tonality, as we usually do. None of that tapped into the new features.

But, you know, that was reassuring in a way.

The improvements are targeted at some special cases like batch editing without impinging on the way you've become accustomed to working with Capture One Pro. That's, after all, what we think of when we hear "upgrade."

The beta we ran didn't include the 10 new Spring Styles so we waited until the release version to run try them on our image. Shown above is the warmest of the set applied to our final edit, which is also there for comparison.

We're glad to see some of the less glamorous improvements like support for 12-bit uncompressed Nikon files and expanded AppleScript support.

And while it wasn't possible to test the Resource Hub's actual resources before release, that's an improvement from the previous approach, aggressively tackling one of Capture One's biggest hurdles (namely, it's learning curve). We'll be sure to give that work out in the coming days.
