In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Arnold Newman, Roberto Badin, photo editors, the Canon R camera, McNally on the prairie, an aspect ratio tool and Timothy White.

  • In Examining Arnold Newman's Environmental Portraits, Rena Silverman writes that the photographer "was not interested in the details of his subject’s surroundings, but the symbols he could create with them." A new book, Arnold Newman: One Hundred, shows just what he meant.
  • In Away From Chaos, Roberto Badin's New Photo Book Captures the Quieter Nuances of Japan, Stephanie Wade peeks inside the Brazilian photographer's new photo book Inside Japan.
  • In What Photo Editors Want From Photographers Now, Photo District News interviews photo editors about how they find and evaluate new photographers and how they match photographers and assignments.
  • Zach Sutton reviews the Canon EOS R Mirrorless Camera. Don't expect any size savings with the native lenses, he cautions, but he likes the handling and auto focus.
  • In A Little Light on the Prairie, Joe McNally writes, "A favorite Z 7 shot of late has been of Nancy De Santis, out on the plains, with one of her favorite horses." It took five minutes with one flash.
  • This Aspect Ratio Tool cycles through different aspect ratio crops when you click on the format button. You can drag-and-drop your own image onto the page, too.
  • Timothy White has been nominated for a New Jersey Hall of Fame Award. Voting for the nominees runs through Dec. 15 with the individuals receiving the most votes in each category being automatically inducted. The 2018 inductees will be announced in late December and formally inducted in a red-carpet ceremony on the first Sunday in May.
