In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Kazakh Glaciers, Sofia Jaramillo, renaming files, travel photography, a new Import Browser, cropping and the Global Billboard Project.

  • In Tourists Flock to Kazakh Glaciers, Pavel Mikheyev presents a set of Reuters images showing locals prevented from traveling are visiting the glaciers of the Tian Shan mountain range. Sometimes dangerously without guides.
  • Heidi Volpe talks to Sofia Jaramillo about her shoot for Stetson. "This series is important to me because both myself and the model, Emilé Zynobia, wanted to create imagery that challenged the traditional notion of what a cowgirl is and who should be included in the narrative of the American West," Jaramillo says.
  • Julieanne Kost shares "several important tips" for Renaming Files in Lightroom Classic. We've never understood the impulse to rename image files. It's far more important (and easier) to organize them in meaningfully named directories or folders. For example, "2021.03.09 Sunset" would sort chronologically and reveal what the shoot was without the bother of renaming the files.
  • What Is Travel Photography? asks travel photographer Dave Williams. "Travel photography takes landscapes, cities, street photography, night photography and all other genres and any or all of them can be travel photography if one thing is achieved and that one thing is this: it's not a subject, it's a feeling," he writes.
  • Derrick Story takes a look at The Impressive Import Browser in Capture One Pro 21 in an update released earlier today in a free update. You can now select images on your card to import (you know, like Image Capture has always let you do).
  • Lloyd Chambers walks through the choice between Micro Four Thirds vs. Cropping Full-Frame or APS-C. My conclusion therefore is that this whole discussion comes down to 'it all depends on actual usage,'" he writes. "It does not depend on logic-by-numbers; it depends on what you actually shoot and how and what you are willing to carry and your budget."
  • Belgian photographer Elisa Maenhout has won Feature Shoot's first Global Billboard Project award for her image Mermaid Iris, which will be displayed on a billboard in Manhattan’s Fashion District. Submissions are now being accepted for the second edition of the award.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
