In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at resilience, Alessia Morellini, Jason Eskenazi, PhotoNOLA, snowflakes and the Fred Marcus Studio.

  • In Voices of Resilience, Andrew Selsky features portraits of "self-sacrifice, courage and perseverance" as we enter the second year of the pandemic.
  • In The Beauty Is in the Detail, Stephanie Wade presents the work of Italian photographer Alessia Morellini. Looking at her images, Wade writes, "it's as if we are in a strange, unreal place, perhaps a dream state or a warm holiday destination."
  • Justin Herfst reviews Wonderland: A Fairy Tale of the Soviet Monolith, a photobook by Jason Eskenazi of Russian life "that reverberates with the classic structure of dark fairy tales."
  • Jonathan Blaustein has published the first part of his review of Projects From PhotoNOLA. This segment includes images by Cathy Cone, Diana Nicolette Jeon, Elizabeth Clark Libert, Nathalie Seaver, Rene Algesheimer and Suzette Bross.
  • Kenneth Change describes two systems for capturing Snowflakes as You've Never Seen Them Before. One uses a custom rig with sapphire slides and the other a digital camera and a black mitten.
  • In After 80 Years, Still Smiling on the Job, Alix Strauss profiles three generations of the Fred Marcus Studio, wedding specialists. Fred was followed by Andy who is being followed by Brian. "My father had a wonderful way with people. He told me to never say 'smile' to someone. Talk to them instead," Andy Marcus said.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
