In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Vorkuta, eclipses, Sarah Everard's vigil, tool presets, bottles, mountains, GFX 100S shadow performance, a Velvet 28 discount, the Miops Flex and LensCulture's new contest.

  • Grace Ebert presents photos by Arseniy Kotov of A Frozen Apartment Complex in Vorkuta, the coldest city in Europe.
  • Luca Bottazzi has been captivated by the space between day and night since experiencing the 20154 solar eclipse. With his series Eclipse, he portrays the darkening of the sun as a magical moment of everyday life.
  • Lena Felton talks to Reuters photographer Hannah McKay, whose Photos From Sarah Everard's Vigil Went Viral. Everard was the 33-year-old marketing executive who went missing March 3 when, walking home, she was kidnapped and subsequently murdered. A British police officer, Wayne Couzens, 48, has been charged with her kidnapping and murder.
  • Julieanne Kost continues her series 3, 2, 1, Photoshop with How to Save Tool Presets in Photoshop:
  • Just charmed by Harold Davis's Tis Bottles. The bottles, yes, but the reflections take it over the top.
  • Mountains Are Calling and Dave Williams is listening (and packing for a trip up the hill as soon as it's safe). We counted five tips.
  • Jim Kasson test the GFX 100S Shadow Performance With 14 and 16 Bit Precision. He doesn't find any banding but "the 16-bit version doesn’t appear significantly better."
  • Lensbaby is offering a 14 percent discount on its Velvet 28 art lens. The Velvet 28, an f2.5 all-metal, hand-crafted art lens designed to capture sharp detail beneath a layer of radiant glow, also features 1:2 macro capabilities.
  • Miops has announced its Flex, which starts at $279 for the 16-GB model (a $20 savings), is now available for pre-order. Flex provides remote control of your camera's f-stop, shutter speed, ISO and shutter button from your smartphone.
  • LensCulture is accepting submissions to Home '21, its new international photography prize. :Submit your series or single images for the chance to be seen by our international panel of experts, receive cash prizes, gain international exposure and be featured in a dedicated photobook we're publishing for this award," organizers said. Deadline is April 21.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
