In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Lunar New Year, Monica Vitti, winter, , lens roadmaps, mobile editing, complexity, LED lighting, a big bid, print papers and the Nikon D500.
- Alan Taylor celebrates Lunar New Year 2022 with 19 photos of fireworks, family get-togethers, temple visits and street festivals. "Collected here are images from several countries where revelers are welcoming the Year of the Tiger," he writes.
- The Guardian highlights the career of Italian actress Monica Vitti, who has died at the age of 90.
- Dahlia Ambrose presents 25 images of The Beauty of the Winter Season. Both outdoors and indoors.
- Roger Cicala explains Why Manufacturers Make a Specific Camera Lens. "Wherever the idea originates it goes up and down and back and forth for a while as the various groups balance out the 'lens design triangle': cost vs. size vs. quality," he writes. In the end, it's rather random, he admits.
- In Embracing the Mobile Platform, retoucher Lisa Carney shows how far you can take an image edit on your phone. Pretty far, in fact, if not quite all the way.
- In Cult Camera (Or: We're Just Talking), Mike Johnston bemoans the complexity of the modern digital camera. It has "managed to take the joy out of many cameras for me," he writes. And, he speculates, explains why so many of us defer to our smartphones.
- Jim Kasson tests Nikon Z 9 Performance With Household LED Lighting with its 12-row blocked readout. No problem.
- Craig Oppenheimer estimates Lifestyle Images for a Pharmaceutical Client. Interesting line item: "Additionally, we included one Covid test per attendee, as well as a few hundred dollars for PPE/supplies."
- Selecting the Right Paper for Your Prints Webinar is a free webinar this afternoon with Hahnemühle's Veronica Cotter and Eric Luden.
- Nikon Rumors (among many other sources) reports The Nikon D500 Is Now Officially Discontinued.
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
