In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Ukraine, a shirtless guy, black-and-white images, soft proofing, tulips, Kokum scarves and a Rocky Nook deals.

  • The Guardian's photo essay documents Two Weeks of War in Ukraine. "The first two weeks of the conflict -- a fortnight for observers but a cold eternity for the people of Ukraine -- have already yielded countless disturbing images even as Europe, a continent with a short memory, pinches itself Raw to make sure that what should not and could not, ever happen here again really is happening here again," writes Sam Jones.
  • Bradley Meinz's best phone picture is of a Shirtless Guy sunbathing in a tow-away zone on a Los Angeles street.
  • Derrick Story observes B&W Is More Than the Absence of Color. "After thinking about all of this, it finally dawned on me what I truly love about B&W photography: it allows me to see the world in a whole new way. How wonderful is that?" he writes.
  • Kevin Raber and Jeff Schewe explore Soft Proofing, the Secret to Making Great Prints in a 20-minute video that is part of the PXL Print series. "Soft proofing shows you what kind of impact will occur in the gamut reduction (gamut is how much of the range of color the printer can reproduce) and the impact on the dynamic range of the image," Raber writes.
  • A landscape photographer who has been photographing tulips for many years "from every possibele angle" has written a Guide for Photographing Tulips in the Netherlands on Reddit.
  • Colorful Kokum Scarves are originally found in many Slavic countries. In Indian country, where they know something about invasion, they are being worn to express solidarity with the Ukrainians. Anna King tells the story with snapshots of the colorful scarves.
  • To celebrate Women's History Month, Rocky Nook is offering a 40 percent discount on any book by its women authors. Use the code INSPIRE40 at checkout.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
