We know, of course, that goblins and ghosts aren't real. And that skeletons don't claw their way out of their graves. And witches do not ride broomsticks (or even Roombas, for that matter).
But we do enjoy indulging one night a year in wondering what if all that was real. What would it be like?
Strangely, it always seems to be rather neighborly.
The witches tend to be rather short and grateful for small favors. The monsters get weary of growling behind their hot masks. The ghosts get a little chilly after the sun goes down and resort to hoodies. The zombies are always in a rush to get home to sample their treats.
But everyone is in a pretty friendly mood. "Trick or treat!" is followed with a quick, "Thank you!" and a dash to the next house.
Or so we remember it. The pandemic took that away too. But this year we expect to see a revival.
The goblins and ghosts will appear on our streets again. The skeletons will have clawed out of their graves. The witches will have parked at the curb to run up to the door for a treat.
Even the zombies might hang around a little longer this year.
