In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Kherson, Nan Goldin, Steven Siegel, mixed lighting, Capture One 23 culling and replacing a sky.
- Residents Face New Reality in Retaken Kherson features Associated Press images of life in the Ukrainian city. "Though free from Russia's control, the southern city and its surroundings are still living the consequences of nearly nine months of occupation, and feeling the deadly proximity of the Russian forces, now stationed across the Dnieper River."
- Sarah McCammon interviews director Laura Poitras about her new documentary, _All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, a chronicle of photographer Nan Goldin's activism in the opioid epidemic. Naomi Fry reviews the film in Nan Goldin's Art, Addiction, and Activism. "For many years, the Sackler name was plastered on various cultural institutions to which the family had donated money," Fry explains. "Goldin, whose work is held in the permanent collections of many major museums, decided to use her art-world standing to target the Sacklers; through demonstrations in various museums, such as the Met, the Louvre and the Guggenheim, she shamed the Sacklers and the institutions that were willing to take the family's blood money -- funds which, P.A.I.N. (Prescription Addiction Intervention Now) argued, the Sacklers should use to redress the damage wrought by the opioid crisis."
- In Back in Time, Feroz Khan interviews Steven Siegel about his long love affair with photographing New York City. "I am drawn to photographing New York for its unparalleled street photography and for its distinctive landmarks," he says. The piece showcases a number of Siegel's images from as far back as the 1980s.
- In Notes From an Extremely Happy Assignment, Kirk Tuck finds Lightroom's new object selection and masking tools an effective way to handle mixed lighting.
- Culling Is Better in Capture One 23, Much Better, Derrick Story finds. "Culling is one of the least exciting activities (other than keywording)," he writes. "Yet the engineers at Capture One have found a way to make this enjoyable."
- Kendall Plant shows How to Replace a Sky in Adobe Photoshop in a step-by-step tutorial with a download of the working files so you can play along at home.
