In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at NYT photographers on Ukraine, Sigma's Z primes, Canon's R50, income, product photography, a Shutterfly migration guide and an AI primer.

  • In Our Photographers in Ukraine on the Images They Can't Forget (gift link), the New York Times presents 14 photographers who answer the same two questions: What image has stayed with you from your coverage of the first year of the war and why?
  • In Sigma Officially Joins the Z Mount, Thom Hogan comments on the news that Sigma is bringing its 16mm, 30mm and 56mm f1.4 primes to the Z system after previously releasing them for the Canon M, Fujifilm XF, L mount, Micro Four Thirds and Sony E mounts.
  • In Canon Evolves Its Lineup, Mike Johnston wonders "whether the R50 is actually the advance guard for the eventual replacement of the Rebels." His "partially educated guess is that the R50 is not just the M50 II replacement; it's actually the Fort Sumter cannon of the new Rebels."
  • Rob Haggart details how much a Commercial Advertising and Fine Art Photographer in Southern California made before and after Covid. "My clients are Fortune 500 and run the gamut from awesome to terrible," the photographer says.
  • Jasenka Grujin provides 20 Creative Examples of Product Photography. "Product photography is really a modern take on the traditional still life," she writes. "Although what you are trying to achieve with your image is to entice the viewer to buy a product, rather than enjoy your creativity."
  • Reddit poster Rander offers a Shutterfly Migration Guide after completing a 20-year migration of six Share-Sites with 423 albums and 8,573 photographs to SmugMug. Using a six-step transfer process it took 50 hours.
  • Everything You Wanted to Know About AI -- but Were Afraid to Ask is a comprehensive but readable primer by the Guardian's technology editors Alex Hern and Dan Milmo.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
