In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Brendon Burton, 100 for the Ocean, The 'Blur' Portfolio, Saroyan Humphrey, Blue Hour shots, the Sony SLT-A77, histograms and Affinity 2.1.

  • In Moments of Nostalgia and Wonder in North America's Most Isolated Places, Kate Mothes features Brendon Burton's images "of rural places that are culturally worlds apart from major urban centers, seemingly existing on their own timelines."
  • Matt Fidler presents a few images from 100 for the Ocean, which are for sale through May 31 to support "under-funded and under-recognized ocean-focused NGOs voted for by photographers."
  • Mike Johnston has published the winners of his Baker's Dozen: The 'Blur' Portfolio. A couple of the links are broken, unfortunately.
  • Suzanne Sease features On Nightlight, the personal project of Saroyan Humphrey. "In the dark, light can take on new meaning and offer a fresh look at what may, in daylight, seem ordinary," the San Franciscan photographer writes. "In night's shadow, the world looks different." Especially when the fog rolls in.
  • Jason Row suggests Six Ideas to Create Stunning Blue Hour Shots. "The blue hour is an amazing time of day, often overlooked for the beautiful sunrises and sets of the golden hour," he writes.
  • Kirk Tuck remembers the Sony SLT-A77, which can be found for around $400 used. "There's better stuff here now. But man, that was a good system for its time. Especially if you could slow down and use it the right way," he writes.
  • In A Deep Dive Into Histograms, Jim Kasson shows "the various forms that photographic histograms can take." IN the next installment, he promises to talk about how to read them.
  • Affinity 2.1 has been released, adding "WebP and JPEG XL batch export in Photo, plus a ton of enhancements to layers, guides, brushes, strokes, warping and much more."

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
