In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at AI copyright violations, climbing Cholitas, Snap Pro Camera, Sports Illustrated, local color, Mike Johnston and unintended macOS upgrades.

  • In We Asked AI To Create the Joker It Generated a Copyrighted Image (gift link), Stuart A. Thompson reports consistently disturbing results of simple text requests that violate copyright law.
  • Suzanne Sease features Climbing Cholitas, the personal project of Todd Antony. "In January of 2019 they summited the 22,841ft peak of Mt Aconcagua. The highest mountain outside of Asia," he says. "And did so eschewing traditional climbing clothing in favor of their traditional, vibrant, billowing dresses and using their traditional shawls to carry equipment rather than backpacks."
  • Miops has introduced its free Snap Pro Camera for a dSLR experience with on the iPhone using manual controls.
  • Joe McNally calls it in Game Over at Sports Illustrated. "The pictures live on, memorializing and celebrating the athletes we revere, capturing the anguish, pain, exhilaration and effort required to be the best on the field," he writes.
  • Harvey Stearn continues his Cityscapes series with Local Color which "has more to do with the culture of a city or town than anything else."
  • Mike Johnston could help but post an Update the Day After his pacemaker surgery. "The wound is very small and I'm told it will heal quickly," he writes. "If anyone out there ever needs a pacemaker, I would say not to worry too much."
  • In Avoiding Unintended Upgrades to macOS, Howard Oakley tackles reports of spontaneous Sonoma upgrades with some advice.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
