In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at In Pieces, photographing the dead, art producers, handling a camera, a rocket launch, InDesign exhibition layout, Photoshop Insider and text in images.

  • Sophie Wright reviews In Pieces, a collaboration between five female Ukrianian artists in the Netherlands working with photography. "Kateryna Snizhko, Lia Dostileva, Sophia Bulgakova, Ola Lanko and Katia Motyleva have all experienced the conflict from different perspectives and proximities, each with their own questions on how much or little they wish to engage with the issue that has indelibly shaped all of their lives," she writes.
  • In How Photographing the Dead Helped Celebrate Life, Melissa Casas interviews Alyse Yeargan, curatorial assistant from Getty Museum's Department of Photographs, about death portraits and post-mortem photography. "Post-mortem photographs have always been intended for private consumption by loved ones," Yeargan says. "The only difference is that now, we can take our own on our smartphones instead of hiring someone to do it for us."
  • In Survey From Art Producers, Susanne Sease and Heather Elder talk to art producers about their opinions on personal projects and why they are so important. "Through the points of view of these industry professionals, we aim to glean insights that not only guide photographers but also illuminate the ever-shifting dynamics of contemporary photography," Sease writes.
  • Mike Johnston discusses Carrying a Camera Painlessly. He identifies two skills to work on: camera handling and camera bag handling.
  • In Photographing a Rocket Launch ... Remotely? Max Evans details the mission, the gear and the process for using remotes to capture a launch. "As our cameras clicked and chattered away while Falcon 9 thundered off of the pad following T-0, they captured some of the most creative and captivating angles of the Ax-3 mission's starting point," he writes.
  • Jim Kasson shows how he's Using InDesign to Lay Out an Exhibition (or a living room wall for that matter). "You can set up pages in InDesign that are the actual size of the walls," he writes. He exports his images from Lightroom at full size as TIFFs and places them on the wall-sized pages. "There's no image scaling or messing around with thumbnails, which are sources of human error." And one more thing: "InDesign will export the images as JPEGs or PDFs for the people hanging the exhibition to use."
  • In OK, What's Going on With This Blog? Scott Kelby explains he's taking a "creative pause" after 19 years posting on Photoshop Insider while focusing on LightroomKillerTips.com.
  • Are Your Text Secrets Safe in a PDF or Image? asks Howard Oakley. "If you have PDF documents that have been assembled from scans or other images without undergoing any form of text recognition, then macOS currently can't index any text that you may still be able to extract using Live Text," he writes.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
